Hi All,

Here is a look at what we are working on for this week:

Kindergarten: These students will learn about the papel picado (“cut paper”) technique) and use that technique to create snowflakes.

1st Grade: The students in these classes will learn about a special kind of work of art called an interior (an interior is a work of art that shows what things are like indoors).  We will talk about the different parts of an interior (floor, ceiling, walls, furniture) and look at examples of interiors painted by the artist Henri Matisse.  Then, each student will create an interior.  This week, each student will plan his / her inetrior in pencil.

2nd Grade: The 2nd Graders will begin a lesson on portrait photography. After talking briefly about the history of photography, we will  learn that a portrait is a work of art about a person.  If an artist makes a work of art about himself / herself, we learned that that portrait is then called a self-portrait.  We will earn that mood is word for the emotion shown in a work of art and we learned that in a portrait, the artist can use the person’s facial expression and pose to give us clues about the person’s mood.  We will also learn that the camera angle is the position where the camera was placed to take a shot and we looked at how a photographer can also use camera angle to give clues about a mood.  We will look at examples of portrait photographs by Henri Cartier Bresson and Dorothea Lange.  Then, each student will begin by making a sketch of his / her own self-portrait photograph.  Each self portrait must use the student’s pose, the student’s facial expression, and the camera angle to give us clues about the mood.

3rd Grade: These students will continue learning about nonobjective art (art that does not try to represent a person, a place, or a thing).  This week, each student will finish planning his / her drawing in pencil.

4th Grade:  The students in Room 203 will make any necessary revisions to their self-portraits.  To see the worksheets we are using in class, click HERE and HERE.  The students in both classes will learn about art made by the Inuit, a Native American group who lives in the areas near the North Pole. We will look at examples of animal drawings created by Inuit artists and examine the ways these artists use hatching or cross-hatching to show the texture of the animals’ fur, feathers, or scales.  Then, each student will create an animal drawing.  Each drawing must use hatching or cross-hatching to show the texture of the animal’s fur, feathers, or scales.

PLEASE NOTE: Students in Room 203 who were unable to finish their self-portraits in class will be allowed to take them home to complete them.  Self-portraits for students in Room 203 are due Friday @ 9:00 AM.

5th Grade:  Students in Room 210 will finish One-Point Perspective Drawing #2 (to see the video we are using in class, click HERE) Students in Room 219 will continue working on this assignment.

PLEASE NOTE: Students in Room 210 who were unable to finish their drawings during class will be allowed to come in before school or after school to complete them.  I will be available before school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:15 AM – 8:45 AM.  I will be available after school on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45 PM – 4:15 PM.  Any student who is coming during one of these times should make an appointment at least one day in advance and that student should also get written permission from his / her parent (a handwritten note or an email).  Drawings for Room 210 are due Thursday @ 4:15 PM.

6th Grade: The students in Room 218 will continue working on Perspective Drawing #2.  (to see the video we are using in class, click HERE).  Students in room 216 will finish Perspective Drawing #1.  To see the worksheets we are using in class, click HERE and HERE.

7th Grade: The 7th graders in Room 119 will work on two things this week.  They will continue learning about architecture. I will explain that a floor plan is a special type of drawing used by an architect that is like a map of a room.  I will also show them examples of floor plans created by architects.  Each student will the draw a floor plan of a room from his / her home.

Students in these classes will also continue working on an assignment to help gather information they will need for the next art project.  I will explain that migration is the act of relocating from one place to another one and talk about some of the push forces (things that lead people to leave a place) and pull forces (things that draw people to a new place) that lead people to migrate. Each student will choose one side of his / her family and answer some questions about the migration story for those people.  To see the worksheet we are using, click HERE
