Hi All,

Here is what we will be working on this week:

Kindergarten: Students in these classes will continue learning about the artist Piet Mondrian.  He went from making to making representational art (art that shows things from the world around us in a realistic way) to making abstract art (art that takes things from the world around us and changes it).  Eventually, he decided to only use 3 colors (red, yellow, and blue) and 2 shapes (squares and rectangles).  After looking at examples of his paintings, each student will make a Mondrian-inspired drawing.  Today, each student will begin by planning his / her drawing in pencil.

1st Grade: Students in Room 107 will work with clay.  I will show then examples of different kinds of vessels (a vessel is a hollow container) and I will explain that people have been using vessels to make clay for thousands of years.  I will then demonstrate how to use the pinch pottery technique to create a vessel and each student will then use this technique to create his / her own vessel.

PLEASE NOTE: because of the holiday, students in Room 105 will not have art class this week.

2nd Grade: The 2nd Graders will continue their lesson on portrait photography. Each student will continue making a self-portrait photograph inspired by the works of Henri Cartier Bresson and Dorothea Lange.  This week, some students will use cameras to take their self-portraits.  At the same time, other students will begin learning about an artistic movement called Chicago Imagism.  These students will learn that many of these artists got their start right here in Chicago.  These artists made portraits.  Instead of making these portraits in a realistic manner, they made abstract portraits (when an artist makes abstract art, that artist takes things from the world around us and changes them).  The results of the changes made by these artists often resulted in images that were funny or even downright scary.  After looking at examples of Imagist portraits, each student will then continue to create his / her own Imagist-inspired self-portrait.

3rd Grade: These students will continue learning about nonobjective art (art that does not try to represent a person, a place, or a thing).  This week, each student will finish using watercolor paints to paint his / her drawing.

PLEASE NOTE: because of the holiday, students in Room 201 will not have art class this week.

4th Grade:  The students in these classes will continue learning about art made by the Inuit, a Native American group who lives in the areas near the North Pole. This week, each student will finish creating an animal drawing.  Each drawing must use hatching or cross-hatching to show the texture of the animal’s fur, feathers, or scales.

This week, each student in Room 203 will make any necessary revisions to his / her drawing.  Each student in Room 207 will make any necessary revisions to his / her printing plate.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to finish their assignments in class will be allowed to take them home to complete them.  Drawings for students in Room 203 are due Friday @ 9:00 AM.  Drawings for students in Room 207 are due next Tuesday @ 9:00 AM.

5th Grade:  The 5th graders in Room 218 will continue working on their animation project.  This week, students in Room 218 will make any necessary revisions to their first drafts.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to finish their assignments in class will be allowed to take them home to complete them.  Drawings for students in Room 218 are due Friday @ 9:00 AM.

PLEASE NOTE: because of the holiday, students in Room 210 will not have art class this week.

6th Grade: The students will learn about tile work created by artists in Morocco.  I will explain that the religion of Islam was a big artistic influence in this part of the world.  Originally, Muslim artists weren’t allowed to show depictions of people or animals in their works of art. Instead, they focused on shape and pattern.  I will show examples of tiles created by Moroccan artists.  I also explained that each tile uses radial symmetry (if a design has radial symmetry, all of its elements are arranged around the center).  Each student is creating his / her own Moroccan-inspired tile design.  Each student in Room 216 will begin by creating a sketch to plan his / her tile.  Students in Room 219 will finish their first drafts.

NOTE: Any students in Room 218 who are unable to finish their assignments in class will be allowed to take them home to complete them.  Drawings for students in Room 218 are due next Monday @ 9:00 AM.

7th Grade: These students will continue learning about a series of paintings created by the artist Jacob Lawrence called The Migration Series.  This week, each student will make any necessary revisions to their sketches.  If time allows, they will begin transferring their drawings to canvas boards.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to finish their assignments in class will be allowed to take them home to complete them.  Drawings are due Friday morning @ 9:00 AM.

8th Grade: The 8th graders will continue learning about  cel animation.  This week, each group will continue creating a storyboard for their animation.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to finish their assignments in class will be allowed to take work on them before school or after school.  I will be available to work with students before school next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I will be available in the morning from 8:15 AM – 8:45 AM and from 3:45 PM – 4:15 PM.  Any student coming to see me before school or after school needs to give me at least 1 days notice and to get written permission from a parent.
