As we begin the third marking period, here is a look at what we have planned:
Kindergarten: Students in these classes will create Valentine’s Day cards. On the outside, each student will make a drawing of someone he / she loves. On the inside, each student will write a message about why he / she loves that person.
1st Grade: Each student will continue using the pinch pottery technique to create a vessel.
2nd Grade: The 2nd Graders will continue their lesson on portrait photography. Each student will continue making a self-portrait photograph inspired by the works of Henri Cartier Bresson and Dorothea Lange. This week, some students will use cameras to take their self-portraits. At the same time, other students will begin learning about an artistic movement called Chicago Imagism. These students will learn that many of these artists got their start right here in Chicago. These artists made portraits. Instead of making these portraits in a realistic manner, they made abstract portraits (when an artist makes abstract art, that artist takes things from the world around us and changes them). The results of the changes made by these artists often resulted in images that were funny or even downright scary. After looking at examples of Imagist portraits, each student will then create his / her own Imagist-inspired self-portrait.
3rd Grade: These students will continue creating sculptures inspired by the artist Isamu Noguchi. This week, each student will continue using sheets of styrofoam to create at least 5 biomorphic shapes for his / her sculpture. Each student will then begin assembling his / her shapes to create a sculpture.
4th Grade: These students will continue working on their relief printing project. This week, they will continue using their printing plates to create prints.
5th Grade: The 5th graders will continue working on their animation project. This week, each student will finish drawing the pages for his / her flip book.
NOTE: Students who are unable to finish their flip books in class will be allowed to take them home to complete them. Flip books for students in Room 210 are due Wednesday @ 9:00 AM. Flip books for students in Room 219 are due Monday 2/13 @ 9:00 AM.
6th Grade: These students will continue learning about tile work created by artists in Morocco. This week, they will use carving tools to carve their designs into their clay tiles.
7th Grade: These students will continue learning about a series of paintings created by the artist Jacob Lawrence called The Migration Series. This week, each student will finish using oil pastels to paint his / her canvas board.
NOTE: Any students who are unable to finish their assignments in class will be allowed to take work on them before school or after school. I will be available to work with students before school next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I will be available in the morning from 8:15 AM – 8:45 AM and from 3:45 PM – 4:15 PM. Any student coming to see me before school or after school needs to give me at least 1 days notice and to get written permission from a parent. All completed assignments are due next Thursday (2/16) @ 4:15 PM.
8th Grade: The 8th graders will continue learning about cel animation. This week, each group will paint the cels for their animation.
As always, please let me know if there are any questions.
