Hi All,

NOTE: Students in these classes who are unable to finish the required work for their sculptures will be allowed to come in before school or after school to work on them. I will be this Tuesday and Wednesday before school (8:15 AM – 8:45 AM) and after school (3:45 PM – 4:15 PM).  Sculptures are due next Wednesday @ 4:15 PM.

5th Grade: The 5th graders will continue learning about gold work created by the Akan people of Ghana. These designs make extensive use of pattern and the patterns in these designs often use radial symmetry (a design has radial symmetry when all of its elements are organized around the center). Each student is creating an Akan-inspired design. Each student’s design must use at least 3 shapes to create a pattern and each pattern must use radial symmetry. This week, each student will finish inscribing his / her design into a sheet of gold foil.

The 5th graders will also learn about value (the lightness or darkness of a color). Each student will create a value scale (a special type of chart that artists use to help them understand color).

NOTE: Any students who are unable to complete this project in class will be allowed to take it home to complete it. Value scales for students in Room 210 are due Wednesday @ 9:00 AM.  Value scales for students in Room 219 are due Friday @ 9:00 AM.

6th Grade: These students will continue working on designs inspired by tile work from Morocco. This week, each student will finish carving his / her tile.

NOTE: Students in these classes who are unable to finish the required work for their tiles will be allowed to come in before school or after school to work on them. I will be this Tuesday and Wednesday before school (8:15 AM – 8:45 AM) and after school (3:45 PM – 4:15 PM).  Sculptures are due next Wednesday @ 4:15 PM.
