Hi All,

Welcome back!  I hope that everyone had a fun and restful Spring Break.  Here is what is going on this week in art class:

Kindergarten: I will show students how to use different parts of a piece of chalk (the tip, the edge, and the side) to create lines of different thicknesses.  Then, each student will use chalk to create a drawing.  This week, each student will plan his / her drawing in pencil and, if time allows, begin using chalk to color his / her drawing.

1st Grade: Students in Room 105 will continue learning about the artist Pablo Picasso. This week, each student will begin coloring his / her Picasso-inspired drawings in oil pastel.

NOTE: Due to this week’s schedule, students in Room 107 will not have art class this week.

2nd Grade: The 2nd graders will learn about Mayan hieroglyphics.  I will begin by explaining that the Maya lived in what is now Mexico and Central America.  Their language used pictures called hieroglyphics to represent sounds and whole words.  I will show the students the Mayan alphabet and then each student will practice by using Mayan hieroglyphics to write his / her name and at least one sentence that tells about something that he /she did this past week.

3rd Grade: The students in Room 205 will learn about still life drawings.  I will show the students examples of still life paintings created by Henri Matisse, Audrey Flack, and Julia Fish and we will discuss the techniques that artists use to create the illusion of depth in a painting or drawing.  Then, each table will be given 3 objects.  They will arrange these objects so that one object is in the foreground, one object is in the middle ground, and one object is in the background.  Then, each student will make a drawing of the 3 objects at his / her table.

NOTE: Due to this week’s schedule, students in Room 201 will not have art class this week.

4th Grade: Students in Room 207 will continue learning how artists use different techniques, different amounts of pressure, hatching, cross-hatching, stippling) to create different values.  This week, each student will continue using one of these techniques to create a drawing.  Each student’s drawing must use at least 5 different values.

NOTE: Due to this week’s schedule, students in Room 203 will not have art class this week.

5th Grade: The 5th graders will continue learning about value (the lightness or darkness of a color). This week, students i room 210 will lcreate still-life drawings of objects from around the room.  Each student’s drawing must show the highlights, midtones, and shadows for each object.

NOTE: Due to this week’s schedule, students in Room 219 will not have art class this week.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to complete this project in class will be allowed to take it home to complete it. Drawings for students in Room 218 are due next Monday @ 9:00 AM.  Drawings for students in Room 216 are due next Tuesday @ 9:00 AM.

7th Grade: The students in these classes will continue creating clay animations. This week, students in Room 119 will use clay to create the characters for their animations. Students in Room 120 will continue learning about Concrete Poetry.  This week, each student will finish his / her final draft.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to complete this project in class will be allowed to take it home to complete it. Final drafts for students in Room 120 are due next Tuesday @ 9:00 AM.

8th Grade: The 8th graders will begin a lesson on Surrealism.  This is an artistic movement from the early 20th century.  Artists who were a part of this movement were influenced by psychology and by images from their dreams.  They used these images as inspiration and made abstract art by combining things in ways that would never be seen in real life.  After looking at examples of Surrealist sculptures, each student will begin constructing his / her own Surrealist sculpture.  Each student will begin by making a sketch of his / her sculpture.

NOTE: Any students who are unable to complete this project in class will be allowed to take it home to complete it. Sketches for students in Room 116 and 118 are due next Monday @ 9:00 AM.

If there are any questions, please let me know.
